About the Book The concept for Newcomer came over a period of time. Deborah Torbert enjoys helping people, and many times she found herself engaged in conversation about how to manage in New York City. She would pass along what she learned to help the next person. Common meeting places became the subway station platforms, its trains and an Italian Restaurant/Piano Bar called Mimi’s on 52nd and 2nd Avenue. The people there were friendly, and gradually she could see it was similar to the bar on television called Cheers, where "people know about you and like you anyway." It’s that type of place. So, this became a good place to talk with tourists and newcomers about their favorite subject – New York City. The piano players and host were long-time New Yorkers and could answer questions and fill in about the local populace, history and events. It gradually became obvious to Torbert that many people
struggled with the same issues and questions that she had when she first
arrived, so she decided to write a primer for them, something short and to the
point on the practical side of life in the city. The original title had a
subtitle, "...To Reduce Stress, Loss of Money and Culture Shock," which tells
you what to expect inside this little book. |
